The result of inclusion is reached when the DNA profile of a known individual matches the DNA profile found at the crime scene.  This means that the individual is “included” as a source of evidence and is dependent upon the number of locations at the scene which were examined and how often that particular profile is found in the general population.

When an individual’s DNA profile does not match the DNA profile produced from the crime scene, the individual is “excluded” as the doner of the evidence. Further, an “inconclusive” result usually indicates that the DNA testing did not produce enough information to either “include” or “exclude” an individual.  This determination can be reached due to a number of factors.

A review of the DNA evidence can determine whether there are “chain of custody” issues to include the handling of the evidence, preservation of samples, contamination or tampering with the samples originating from the collection of the samples at the crime scene or throughout the process of DNA samples.
